Peter Everett — Hypnagogic
Material, Salt Lake City’s newest contemporary art gallery, is pleased to present the exhibition “Peter Everett: Hypnagogic”, a presentation of new paintings by nationally and internationally exhibiting artist Peter Everett, opening on April 27, 2024.
Born in Utah and raised moving around the country, Peter Everett received an MFA in painting from Pratt Institute and is currently a professor of art at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. His work explores forms that have an immediate visual power, physicality, and a sense of urgency growing from a place just out of sight.
In the artist’s statement for his exhibition “Hypnagogic”, Everett says, “The patterns and shapes in my work are often derived from visual phenomena experienced in transitional periods—between sleep and consciousness or in a meditative state. The work is additive in nature and favors complexity leaning towards a hyper-stimulated visual experience.”
Material co-founder Jorge Rojas says, “Everett’s abstract work is both deeply energetic and meditative. Immersing oneself in his paintings can feel both calming and disorienting at times, as if looking through a veil, or traveling through space in a hallucinatory dream. The radiance emanating from his works, created through the juxtaposition of color and web-like layers, needs to be experienced and felt in person. We are very excited to share this work with the public.”
Everett works to slow down image making and to embed time and a sense of generosity in his paintings through an extensive engagement with materials and process. He makes his own paints and related materials and worked with a master paper maker to create the mulberry paper included in this exhibition. While painting, Everett practices breathing as a form of meditation and as a way to pour energy into the work and to embody the immaterial.
Material will host an opening reception for Peter Everett on Saturday, April 27, from 6:00-9pm, with an artist talk from 5:30-6pm. The exhibition will also be available for viewing on Friday, May 17, 6:00-8pm, as part of Salt Lake City’s Gallery Stroll, during the closing reception on Saturday, June 15, from 6:00-8pm, and by appointment. The artist will be in attendance for the opening and closing receptions of his exhibition.
